As we slog through the doldrums of February, the chess scene has been uncharacteristically active. Let’s take a look at what happened in the past month.

Drama

GM Anish Giri at Tata Steel 2022

Grandmaster Anish Giri’s Twitter account was compromised this past month, with a hacker exposing his private conversations, sending highly explicit tweets, and even leaking streamer Gotham Chess’ personal phone number on Twitter.

The hacker’s tweets were quickly deleted once Anish woke up, but the drama created as a result of the hack was not. Peter Heine Nielsen, Daniil Dubov, and world champion Magnus Carlsen, all of whom were targeted by the hacker, sent out strongly worded replies on Twitter.

Despite the damage, Anish is unfazed and seems to be making the best of the situation.

Tough luck, Anish.

News

With the popular New York Times game Wordle captivating users and flooding social media platforms, one entrepreneurial chess player has developed a chess version of the word game, called Chessle.

An example of a Chessle opening sequence.

The premise of the game is to guess an opening sequence (e.g. 1. e4 e5 2. f2 for the King’s Gambit) in six tries. Sound too difficult? There’s an easy and expert version, so even if you’re a beginner, you still have a shot at guessing right.

Though not as popular as its word-based counterpart, Chessle continues to gain popularity. If you want to try your hand, visit https://jackli.gg/chessle for daily opening puzzles.
